Interior design is an art and science of improving the interior of a commercial building to create a more aesthetically pleasant and healthy environment for those who use the space. An interior designer is a person who designs, plans, studies, coordinates, and oversees such interior improvement projects. These projects include renovation of space, adding furniture, or repainting rooms. An interior designer will often work with architects, draftsmen, property management professionals, and other experts to make space more usable, attractive, and useful. Aesthetics play an important part in how interior design is carried out.

Interior designers are usually considered part-time employees, although some do designs full-time. Generally, though, interior designers are self-employed professionals that generally work alone. Their work may involve private clients, public works, and schools. Some designers work in more specialized fields such as fashion or electronics.

A bachelor’s degree in interior design is generally required to enter the profession. Some states require a master’s degree as well, in addition to a professional license. The interior designer will likely begin with an associate’s degree or some other non-degree program. Many designers begin their careers by working for a school or other company that employs them as an assistant to a designer.

It is important to work with a reputable firm that has experience in both design theory and practice. Before entering the profession, it is also helpful to have an educational background in interior design. Some designers begin their careers with an internship at a firm that already possesses the skills they need to succeed in this field. Working with a mentor within a firm will help to develop skills and create a clearer picture of what is expected of the designer.

The majority of the tasks performed by an interior designer will be on project basis. They will often take on large projects like home renovation and interior design projects. A good designer will be able to meet deadlines and keep a client happy. There are many areas in which a good interior designer may work including floor plans, architectural drawings, room layouts, furniture selection and arrangement, carpet selection and installation, color schemes and wall and floor coverings.

In addition to the actual construction of the interior space, many companies hire interior decorators to oversee all of the furnishing and decorating of the office. Some interior decoration tasks may consist of the provision of new furniture, but they are also responsible for such things as lighting, flooring, countertops, wallpaper, painting, wall coverings, fixtures and electrical wiring. Many interior decorators are self-employed, but others work for larger companies or work as contract employees. These individuals may be hired directly by an organization or they may be freelance. All interior designers are subject to thorough training and must be properly qualified and licensed before taking on any project.
