Interior Design Education And Training
Interior design is a discipline in which a person who possesses the art and science required to produce a well-designed interior sets out to make a home or office suitable for their particular needs. Interior design is an interdisciplinary field which takes into account the knowledge and skills needed to understand human psychology and design. Interior designers are usually hired by real estate developers to improve the way their buildings look. They usually work with architects and decorators in order to create spaces that are comfortable, efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally friendly. Interior designers can work independently or be part of a design team as an integral part of a company’s management.
An interior designer is also someone who studies, researches and coordinates the process of improving the interior of a structure to make it a more aesthetically pleasing and healthy environment for those who use the room. An interior designer needs to have an interest and background in the field of art, science, architecture, interior decoration, aesthetics, psychology, etc. The field of architecture involves everything from form and function to design and construction. The science of architecture deals with the relationships between interior spaces and climate, population, technology, materials, energy, and humans. Art and science often intersect when a designer wants to incorporate certain technological advances into a space.
An interdisciplinary field of study requires a wide variety of technical and communication skills. A student interested in interior design will usually need to take classes that include drawing, drafting, painting, photography, furniture design, electronic media, and architecture. An interior designer may also be required to take classes related to business, law, psychology, interior design, and communications. There are many schools and colleges that offer interior design programs. Many of these programs are accredited and can be considered on the same level as a degree.
Although many states don’t require formal education before one can practice interior design, it is recommended that one obtain at least a diploma in basic interior design. Interior designers learn techniques, strategies, and creative thinking that they can then apply to their own projects. Interior designers are typically involved in the process from start to finish. This means that they plan out what the design elements will look like, create space plans, choose flooring, paint, carpet, fixtures, and lighting. Then they go about building the finished product in a safe and controlled environment.
The educational requirements of becoming an interior designer vary from state to state. The minimum educational requirement to become an interior designer in most states is a high school diploma. Some states require potential interior designers to successfully pass a test based on the theory and practical application of the decorating styles that the school teaches. In some states, completion of an approved college internship or coursework is enough to satisfy state requirements. A professional certification program is usually also needed to qualify as an interior designer in some states.
